Robert Muldoon
Robert Muldoon was the 31st prime minister of New Zealand from 1975 1984. He was the leader of the National Party and was governor of the world bank . He impacted New Zealand in a variety of ways including the economy where he introduced the decimal currency and think big policies. Muldoon was in support of the Springbok tour of New Zealand in 1981. Muldoon’s belief was that politics should not interfere with sport and encouraged the arrival of the Springbok national rugby team of the apartheid period. He believed that it should be up to individual opinions whether or not to play a sports team, which was a part of apartheid. He denied supporting apartheid, and stated that playing a Soviet Union team did not mean you were supporting communism. He urged for sports and politics to be kept separate with various groups being set up in opposition to the tour. Regardless of the controversy of the Springboks rugby team being allowed to tour New Zealand, the National Party won the elected at the end of the year.
